The Cambridge Centre for Greek Studies is delighted to share that on Wednesday, 23 October 2024, David W. Holton, Professor Emeritus at the University of Cambridge, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Department of Philology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. This honour recognises Professor Holton as a “prominent European scholar” devoted to the study and teaching of Modern Greek language and literature, marking his extensive impact on Greek philology.
About David W. Holton
Professor Holton taught Modern Greek at Cambridge from 1981 to 2013, achieving full professorship in 2006. Educated at Oxford and a former Greek Government Scholar at Aristotle University, he is highly respected for his research on Cretan Renaissance literature and his work on medieval and modern Greek grammar. Professor Holton has supervised 16 doctoral theses and, in 2019, was honoured by the Region of Crete for his contributions to Cretan studies.
