Dr. Pippa Steele (Cambridge) reveals the fascinating insights arising from her research into the phenomenon of writing in and around the eastern Mediterranean during the 2nd and 1st millennia BC.
The writing traditions of early Greece bear a close relationship with their cultural context, and evolve in accordance with changing social needs: from the bureaucratic clay documents of the Bronze Age written in Linear A and B, through to the appearance of new alphabetic writing in art, religious practice and symposia in the 1st millennium BC.
Pippa is Director of the ERC-funded project Contexts of and Relations between Early Writing Systems, which involves a small research team taking interdisciplinary approaches to the analysis of these writing traditions and the formulation of new methodologies for studying writing systems and their social context.
