On Sunday, 13 October 2024, the Greek Minister of Education, Mr. Kyriakos Pierrakakis, visited Cambridge, engaging with scholars, students, and members of the Greek and Cypriot community. The Minister's visit included stops at King's College and Trinity College, where he met with members of the Cambridge Centre for Greek Studies and other Greek academics from across the University’s departments. This gathering highlighted the vibrant connection between Greece and Cambridge and provided an important platform for dialogue on shared educational challenges and opportunities.
During the informal visit, discussions covered pressing issues in tertiary education in both Greece and the UK, such as modernising curricula, enhancing academic mobility, and expanding cross-institutional collaboration.
Mr. Pierrakakis has been a key advocate for addressing the challenges facing Greek tertiary education, including securing better funding, improving access for underserved regions, and modernising curricula to meet global employability standards. His tenure focuses on enhancing the integration of digital technologies in education, fostering international collaborations, and ensuring that Greek students are equipped with skills needed in the global job market. Pierrakakis is also committed to expanding opportunities for Greek language education outside Greece, strengthening cultural and academic ties with the diaspora. His efforts align with ongoing reforms to modernise Greece’s higher education landscape. The Minister acknowledged the role of institutions like the Cambridge Centre for Greek Studies in preserving and advancing Greek language education, and he expressed a commitment to fostering greater support for these initiatives.
