Greek Dialogues Online - The cultural politics of the memory of Asia Minor in 1960s Greek prose fiction

After two hybrid events, Greek Dialogues Online returns for the new academic year with a fascinating seminar from Dr Maria Nikolopoulou (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.) 

The 40-year anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1962 marked a turning point in recollections of the event, since it moved beyond the mnemonic communities of the refugees and became gradually intergraded into a national narrative, initially by the Left. Literature and especially prose fiction played a crucial role in that process.

Two novels and a short story collection were published in 1962, which commemorated life in Asia Minor before 1922 and its loss. Dr. Nikolopoulou's presentation examines how the texts, especially Farewell Anatolia by Dido Sotiriou and Stou Hatzifrangou by Kosmas Politis, question national narratives by focusing on the peaceful coexistence of ethnicities and on refugee identities.
