Greek as a Heritage Language

Greeks have been in the diaspora for many years and have tried to maintain their language in the foreign land. Education in Greek has helped sustain the language although educational contexts supporting Greek as a heritage language take different forms in different countries. This presentation will look at the effects of different types of Greek heritage language support in Germany, the UK and the US on children who are heritage speakers of Greek.
Ianthi Maria Tsimpli is Chair of English and Applied Linguistics, co-Director of the Cambridge Centre for Greek Studies and Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, at the University of Cambridge. She teaches and researches in multilingualism, First and Second Language acquisition, language (in) education and cognition, psycholinguistics and language impairment and Theoretical Syntax. Much of her published research focuses on Greek as a first or second language in neurotypical children and adults as well as in Greek-speaking individuals with language or cognitive delays or impairment.
