The first GDO seminar of 2022 features Dr. Manu Dal Borgo (Cambridge) exploring parallels in Athenian reactions to major events in the 5th century BCE and in the 21st century CE.

If we were to say that the reaction of Athenian democracy to a unique type of shocking news, both in antiquity and now, is the same, would it be a far fetched parallelism? It is, however, patent that certain emotions were specifically appealed to by riot mongerers and political leaders during the 2010-2011 anti-austerity riots and during the Peloponnesian war when the Athenians met in 427 BC to decide the fate of the Mytilenian traitors. Finance was the focus of the Athenians' dismay in both cases. The parallels are startling, both in terms of their initial emotional response and in the subsequent practical legal terms of their previous decisions.
